JOHN MICHAEL SMITH - EDUCATOR

John Michael Smith is recognized by Continental Who’s Who among America’s College Professors. Smith has dedicated 25 years to the University of Delaware, educating undergraduate and graduate students, alike. His name is known among the college campus, as students request to enroll in his stimulating courses and compelling lectures every semester. His growing popularity among students is reflected yearly by his repeated nomination as “Educator of the Year,” an award that he has earned for the past 10 years.

As a young man, Smith attended Cambridge Private School in Rhode Island and then continued his education at Harvard, where he graduated with honors. Before he became a professor, Smith traveled the world, researching different cultures. Accounts of his travels have been published, and one has an accredited “New York Times Best Seller” award.

Throughout his life, Smith has been motivated by the pursuit to understand more about our world and the science that is sociology. He has spent 15 years traveling the globe and has brought those experiences into the classroom.

Professor Smith values his role as an educator and continues to deliver expert knowledge and instill wisdom in his students. Among colleagues, Smith has been an inspiration- demonstrating passion and dedication that is sometimes dulled throughout the years.

Smith has left a lasting impression on UD alumni; many of whom return to the campus to visit with the professor, even years after graduation. The interest that he has taken in his students and their post-college success has made for much email correspondence between his once students, and now business leaders of America.

Smith will continue his career as Director of the Sociology department and mentor to UD students. In 2009, he will be a guest speaker at the National Convention for Sociologists, in Washington D.C. and will then take 1 year sabbatical to write his 4th book. At the peak of his career, Smith comments that he is “doing what I was born to do.”
